Nelia Jafroodi is a classical pianist and music educator who discovered her love for the piano at age 6. Her musical journey is steeped in rich experiences, from playing with the Iranian Youth Orchestra to her studies and career in the sciences, where she explored the captivating interplay between music and technology. While she excelled in her scientific pursuits, it was in music education that she found her true passion.
Nelia tailors her teaching approach to work with both children and adults. She emphasizes sight-reading, music theory, harmony, improvisation, and voicing in her lessons, integral skills she considers critical for every musician's development. She encourages regular practice and correct posture, ensuring her students are building a strong and healthy foundation for their musical journey.
Adding a personal touch to her teaching style, Nelia often sings and plays duets with her students. She believes this interactive method not only engages students more effectively, but also allows them to experience the joy of collaborative music-making.
Performance plays a big role in Nelia's philosophy. She arranges recitals for her students, giving them a platform to showcase their progress and build confidence. To keep parents involved, she shares videos of these performances, creating a supportive network for her students.
Outside of teaching, Nelia is committed to using her musical skills to give back to the community. She volunteers her time performing for the elderly and the disabled, and enjoys collaborating with other musicians in Berkeley.
At the heart of Nelia's teaching is a deep-seated passion for music. She aims not only to impart musical techniques to her students, but to inspire in them a lifelong love for music, much like the one that has guided her own path.
